About Thierry

My Creative Intention:

I make custom furniture mostly from sustainably harvested local hardwoods. I design every piece with the client.   My greatest satisfaction is the moment of delivery, seeing a client’s look of delight and pleasure as they touch it for the first time.

Each piece I create is a testament to the harmonious marriage of simple shapes and natural materials.  My designs seek not just to furnish spaces but to elevate the spirit within them.  Imbued with finely executed details, clean lines, and an unwavering reverence for the inherent beauty of nature, these creations become compelling centrepieces that breathe life into a room.

About me:

I was raised in France in a family of artisanal craftsmen: slate roofers on my mum’s side and blacksmiths on my dad’s side. Despite those crafts being passed down many generations, woodworking stole my heart. At age 14, I started my 3-year apprenticeship in traditional European furniture making at school, followed by 1 year in a centuries old organization called “les Compagnons du Devoir du Tour de France”.  At age 30, I moved to Canada where my approach evolved from mastering traditional skills to focusing on how natural wood grain, color and patterns could enrich the furniture design.

About 30 years after embarking on my furniture making career, I decided to start my own atelier.  I built my furniture studio in 2009 on my property in Nelson BC. I spend my time making furniture in the studio, growing food on our homestead and hiking local trails or kayaking on Kootenay Lake.

Finishing:

To enhance the grain and colours of the wood, minimize waste, avoid pollution of land and water and prevent health issues, I use natural oils for finishing the furniture piece. Modern natural oils perform well to protect the wood and enhance the feel of the wood.

They are kid safe, minimize the exposure to toxic molecules during their application and in your home.

They are easy to maintain or refresh over the years. I sell special soap for daily maintenance and a product to refresh the finish when needed. No need to strip. The refinishing process can happen in your home since it is not toxic.

How to order a piece of furniture:

I have a standard line of furniture that is made to order, as well as create custom commissions. Each piece is made by hand, by me. Each piece is unique and treated with individual care.

Custom orders:

I am always happy to design and make a custom piece for your home or office. Let me know what you need, and we can discuss design, cost and freight details.  Once we work out all of the details, I ask for a 50% deposit for custom requests, the remaining balance + freight are charged upon completion.

“I am so happy with how my projects turned out! I really liked how Thierry used design software to show me what my projects would look like before he got to work on them, so I knew exactly what to expect. I was very impressed with the attention to detail and how he adjusted the designs to meet my vision. He was great to work with and kept me updated regularly as to the progress on my projects. He is very professional and I would highly recommend him for any woodworking project, to add a unique and beautiful design to a room.”
